The book covers the coinage and the history of a powerful dynasy, the Alupas. This dynasty ruled Udupi, Mangalore and parts of Shimoga and Uttara Kannada districts, which are in the state of Karanataka, India. The book deals with the history of the Alupas from 5th century C.E. up to 5th century C.E.. The strudy is primarily based on over one hundred twenty epigraphs. The book also narrates the only known copper plate grant of the Alupa dynasty along with 175 unique gold coins issued by the dynasty. The book has 40 over colour plates with high resolution images. The book publishes for the first time, the silver taras, 70 unpublished varieties of gold fanams and over 50 unpublished Gold Gadyanas out of 80 listed in total. The book brings to the limelight, the collections of over 20 collectors worldwide. Both the coins and the epigraphs have been brought together to support one another and the illustrations have brought the history and numismatics to life in this work. Details such as life, land, culture, art, administration, coinage, metrology etc, are covered in depth as well. The book also dedicates a separate plate to cover every known modern Alupa coin fakes that exist in the market, with the help of a separate chapter. Chapter illustrates the method in fabricating the fakes. Every aspect of numismatics including the way the coins are handled, maintained, is covered in the book.
